However, new research from the University of Illinois explains "how and why a moderately high protein diet may be the best for losing weight." One way to follow this finding is to eat a diet high in protein, consisting of whey protein drinks, meat, vegetables and multivitamins. Even for athletes, the protein diet is beneficial for loosing weight because it has been found to lower their weight while maintaining lean muscle mass, according to the Sports Science Exchange.

    Visit a local nutrition retailer or use such keywords as "whey protein powder" to find an online distributor, and get a 5-lb. tub. Select a brand with plain flavoring so you can add your own flavor to taste. According to "The 6 Week Cure for the Middle-Aged Middle," each serving should have less than 3 grams of carbohydrates and 18 to 25 grams of protein. In addition, order a bottle of L-leucine powder, an amino acid that helps with weight loss.

    Visit your doctor and ask to have a what is known as a comprehensive metabolic panel. Through this panel, you can find out your cholesterol levels, liver and kidney function, and the acid-base levels -- to avoid any potential problems you might have with a protein diet. Plan to eat fruit for a snack between smoothies. Look for dinner recipes that include only lean meat and vegetables. Include plenty of water in the menu.

    Go shopping for such protein-rich foods as chicken, beef, pork and fish. Buy meats labeled as free-range or grass-fed. According to the University of California Cooperative Extension Service, grass fed protein contains higher levels of substances "with favorable biological effects on human health." Buy the best quality possible and don't worry about price.

    Go organic. Visit local health-food stores or supermarkets that have organic and natural foods. Choose fresh, uncooked meats, not precooked or meats. Fill your cart with veggies, such as broccoli, spaghetti squash, cauliflower, zucchini, asparagus, spinach, avocado, green beans and salad mix. Select fruits, such as cantaloupe and berries.
