Recipes for Gallbladder & Liver Cleanse

Your liver cleanses the blood, filters waste products and produces bile. Your gallbladder stores the bile, which eventually will assist with food digestion. Some natural health practitioners say that cleansing and detoxing the liver and gallbladder will improve your digestion, alleviate some allergic reactions and ease pain in the shoulder, upper arms and the upper back.

Symptoms

Fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, a yellow tint to the skin or eyes, weight gain, water retention, chemical sensitivities, allergies, constipation and bloating are signs that it may be time to detoxify your liver and gallbladder.

Causes

Poor diet, too much alcohol consumption, reactions from some medications, certain chemicals that you have ingested or been exposed to, or having viral hepatitis may contribute to an unhealthy liver or gallbladder.

Cleanse 1

Start this liver flush, from "The Natural Path's Liver Detox," on a Saturday and make sure not to take any medicines, antibiotics or vitamins so they don't interfere with the effects of the cleanse. You will need 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, which will stimulate the excretion of bile to push deposits out of the liver and gallbladder; 1 large organic grapefruit, which helps eliminate deposits in the liver; 1/2 cup of Epsom salt, which acts as a laxative to move these deposits from the body; four to eight 500 mg L-ornithine capsules, which will help you sleep; and a bottle of milk thistle capsules to help cleanse and rejuvenate the liver.

This cleanse will last one afternoon and the following morning. The first day, avoid eating fatty foods and do not eat anything after 2 p.m. At 6 and 8 p.m., add 1 tbsp. of Epsom salt to 3/4 cups of water and drink it. At 10 p.m., mix 1/2 cup olive oil and the juice from the grapefruit, which should equal about 3/4 cup. Take four L-ornithine capsules and go to bed immediately. If you can't sleep, take up to four more L-ornithine capsules. Lie on your back for 20 minutes, then try to go to sleep. If you are awake when the cleanse takes effect, you may experience discomfort. After 6 a.m., mix 1 tbsp. of Epsom salt and 3/4 cups of water and drink it. After 10 a.m. you can eat small, light meals throughout the day. Start taking the milk thistle capsules when you have finished the liver cleanse. Take 200 mg a day for a week, then move to the maximum dosage, 400 to 600 mg daily until the bottle is finished.

Cleanse 2

This version is a quicker cleanse if you don't have the time for Cleanse 1. It is more of a maintenance cleanse and is not a substitute for a full cleanse. A full cleanse does a thorough cleaning, while a maintenance cleanse just flushes out some of the debris.

You will need two to three Cascara Sagrada pills, which act as a laxative; juice from 1/2 of a lemon, which helps eliminate deposits in the liver; juice from two grapefruits, which also helps eliminate deposits; and 2 tbsp. of olive oil to stimulate bile excretion. Mix this at 10 p.m., drink it and go straight to bed to allow the mixture to work properly.

Foods

Eating fresh, raw fruits and vegetables is recommended after a flush because of their fiber, which promotes digestive health. Cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are good choices. Healthy oils from nuts and fish help lubricate the liver and help with the cleansing process. Avocadoes, whole grains, honey, kelp, kombu, garlic, eggs, onions, white radishes, red peppers, artichoke hearts, asparagus, citrus fruits, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, flax, alfalfa seeds, live yogurt and probiotics are also recommended after the flush. Stay away from sugar, salt, bad fats, processed foods, antibiotics, artificial preservatives, artificial flavors and colors that may reintroduce toxins.

Tips

Drink plenty of water before, during and after a cleanse. Expect diarrhea from a cleanse. You may feel a bit off within the next few weeks from stubborn, residual toxins in the body. You may want to do another cleanse in a month or so.
