About Liquid Diets

Weight loss through liquid nutrition is hardly a novel concept in the dieting industry. Liquid diets were first widely introduced to mainstream society through the "Slim-Fast" plan, which facilitated weight loss through daily consumption of "two healthy shakes and a sensible dinner." Although a slew of liquid diet plans are available on the market today, they all revolve around the same basic model--caloric restriction through consumption of shakes instead of solid meals. If you are considering a liquid diet, there are several issues you need to understand.

Do Liquid Diets Work?

    Generally speaking, liquid diets are almost always effective for weight loss. This is not due to any intrinsic weight loss properties of liquid meals, but rather is caused by the sharp caloric deficit that you will experience while on the diet. Thus, liquid diets are not inherently superior to a comparable solid food diet, provided calories are otherwise equal.

Advantages of Liquid Diets

    The primary advantage of a liquid diet is that it leaves little room to stray off the plan. Meals are pre-prepared and pre-planned, so the chances of you engaging in an "impulse cheat" while on a liquid diet are far less than a solid food diet where you are constantly making your own meal decisions. Thus, in the short term, liquid diets are a shortcut to losing weight.

Disadvantages of Liquid Diets

    In the long term, however, dieters on liquid plans often suffer malaise and boredom from the repetitive nature of the diet. While most people can endure a liquid diet for a few weeks, attempting to stay on a liquid diet for much longer than that will significantly increase the probable rate of failure. Human nature enjoys variety, and a liquid diet does not provide sufficient amounts to hold interest for the long haul.

Dangers of Liquid Diets

    There are also dangers associated with liquid diets--namely vitamin and mineral deprivation. Because man-made nutrition will always be inferior to that which is found in nature, a liquid diet has the potential to leave your body deficient in a number of nutrients that would otherwise be found in a comparable solid food diet. Thus, while the harms suffered while on a short-term liquid diet might not be excessive (or even noticeable), long-term liquid dieting can lead to health problems.

Considerations

    Keeping the advantages and disadvantages of liquid diets in mind, it is clear that liquid diets are viable solutions for weight loss but only on a short-term basis. If you are planning on going on a liquid diet, do not stay on it for more than a month or two. Consider liquid diets as a way to jump-start weight loss but not as a permanent solution.
