What Foods to Eat on a No Yeast Diet

What Foods to Eat on a No Yeast Diet

Yeasts live in the human body without incidence in most cases. At times, yeast and yeast-like micro-organisms like Candida can multiply and create an imbalance, resulting in conditions such as vaginal yeast infections, oral thrush, bladder infections, nail infections, ringworm, conjunctivitis and athlete's foot. Those who are affected may benefit from a diet low in yeast or one that is completely yeast-free.

Vegetables

Most vegetables are yeast-free and provide a balance of healthy vitamins and minerals that can improve overall health and combat yeast sensitivity. With the exception of mushrooms, which are a fungus, any vegetable is generally considered appropriate for a no-yeast diet. Christiane Northrup, M.D., is a member of the American Board of Holistic Medicine and the New York Times best selling author of "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" and " The Wisdom of Menopause." According to Northrup, foods like spinach, tomatoes and potatoes that are rich in vitamin C can prevent recurring yeast infections. Choose vegetables that are fresh and firm with no mold present, and avoid vegetables that are excessively damaged or bruised.

Meat, Nuts and Grains

Meat is naturally yeast-free as long as it is stored and cooked properly. Any type of beef, fish, poultry and uncured pork should be suitable for a no-yeast diet. In addition to beans and unprocessed seeds, nuts and whole grains like barley, couscous, buckwheat and millet are also acceptable fin a no-yeast diet. These foods provide protein and essential fatty acids for good overall health.

Fruits

Most fruits are suitable for a no-yeast diet, and those rich in vitamin C, like oranges, tangerines and grapefruits, as well as berries and papaya, can protect again recurring yeast infections. Fruit that is naturally sweeter may aggravate yeast sensitivity, so avoid any fruit that negatively impacts your yeast symptoms. Natural cranberry juice is often recommended to alleviate symptoms of yeast imbalance, such as vulva itch and urinary tract infection. Most fruit drinks should be avoided. When the fiber is removed to extract juice, a higher concentration of natural fructose sugars, paired with the addition of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup by food manufacturers, can worsen yeast sensitivity.

Probiotics

Probiotics are a type of healthy bacteria that may support healthy digestion and reduce levels of bacteria that can cause yeast infections. Probiotics are naturally present in some foods, such as yogurt with active cultures and buttermilk. In addition, many food manufacturers add probiotics to foods like yogurt, frozen yogurt, ice cream and cottage cheese.
