Liquid Food Diets

Liquid Food Diets

Liquid diets are used for a variety of reasons. It is an effective way to cut calories without reducing nutrition. Spiritual or health fasts allow you to consume broth and juice during the fast or as you ease back to solid food. People experiencing tooth pain or undergoing dental work might be limited to a liquid diet for a few days while their mouths heal. Liquid diets are used before and after surgery to keep the digestive system clean and free of materials that interfere with the operation. People who have bariatric (weight-loss) surgery consume a liquid diet in the days and weeks following the procedure. Liquids are easier to digest, but contain vitamins and nutrients vital for maintaining health.

Clear Liquids

The most severe liquid diet includes only clear liquids. It is used when the body is unable to digest soft foods or thick, heavy liquids. Clear liquid diets are used before or after stomach or bowel surgery. It is also recommended for people suffering from vomiting or nausea. The diet usually lasts only a day or two because getting the proper vitamins and nutrients is difficult. A clear liquid diets prevents you from dehydrating when you are not consuming solid food. Liquids include water, apple and grape juice, clear broth and clear soda.

Full Liquid Diet

A full liquid diet includes all liquids, but no solid foods. This diet enables you to eat when you are unable to chew or swallow food, or when digesting solids is difficult. The diet includes food that has been blended into liquid, as well as milk, broth and water. A full liquid diet can be used for longer periods of time because the liquids included in the diet provide the vitamins and minerals needed to maintain health. To consume a healthy amount of calories when the full liquid diet is not being used for weight loss, include pudding, custard, milkshakes, baby food, melted butter and maple syrup.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are one of the most important features of a full liquid diet. Use a juice machine or blender to mix the fruits and vegetables, creating a smoothie that is packed with nutrients and vitamins. Healthy smoothies feature a variety of different fruits and vegetables and help dieters lose weight without feeling deprived. To add calories and protein to a smoothie, mix in yogurt, milk or ice cream. This creates a creamy texture that tastes delicious and satisfies your hunger.

Other Foods

Some liquid diets include foods that are partially solid like oatmeal, cream of wheat and grits. Your doctor might recommend honey, hard candy or fruit ice to satisfy your craving for sweets when on a liquid diet. Creamed soups like mushroom or chicken might also be allowed. If the purpose of your liquid diet is to ease back into solid foods or reduce the pan of eating, you will have far more options than if the purpose is to cut calories.
